JOHOR BARU: The
Pulau Bayas tax-free zone in Tasik Kenyir, Terengganu is expected to be fully
operational by September.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri
Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman said work was 75% complete.
"I am confident we
can open the tax-free island by September," he told reporters after
launching 'Beautiful Terengganu Malaysia' at Plaza Angsana here.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Razif
said the state government is targetting 6.5 million local and foreign tourists
in conjunction with Visit Terengganu Year 2017.
He said the target was
realistic as numerous promotion campaigns had been conducted since the end of
last year.
"We are targeting
30% to 40% of the 6.5 million visitors to Terengganu to be from abroad,"
said Ahmad Razif.
Among the programmes
organised is this year’s Beautiful Terengganu campaign as well as promotions
overseas including several major cities in China, he said.
Also present were State
Tourism, Domestic Trade and Consumerism Committee chairman Datuk Tee Siew Kiong
and Terengganu Tourism and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jidin Shafee.
Ahmad Razif said the
campaign was held in Johor Baru to attract domestic tourists from the southern
region as well as Singaporeans.
Based on statistics from
Tourism Malaysia obtained from the MATTA Fair held in PWTC Kuala Lumpur earlier
this month, Terengganu came out second in the sale of tour packages at
RM1.05mil after Kedah at RM1.7mil.
Pahang recorded RM1.01mil in tour package sales
at the fair, Johor recorded RM855,524 and Selangor, RM454,507. – Bernama
